Setting Up Happ Proxy for Selective Access

Sometimes you don't need to tunnel your whole device through a VPN — routing just one browser or app through the server is enough to reach a blocked resource. That's what Happ's Proxy mode does: it spins up a local proxy built on Xray-core and connects only the apps you choose to it. Here's how to set it up on mobile and desktop.

What you'll need first

You'll need an active key or subscription link — issued through the Happ service Telegram bot — and the app already installed. If you haven't installed Happ yet, grab it on /en/setup/ and add your key the same way you would for a regular VPN connection.

Switching the app to Proxy mode

The steps are largely the same across platforms:

  • Open Happ and make sure your key is added and working.
  • Find the mode switch in settings and select Proxy instead of VPN.
  • The app launches a local Xray-core proxy server and displays the address and port to connect to.
  • Open any site that shows your IP address — if everything's set up correctly, it'll display the server's address instead of your own.

For how Proxy mode compares to a full VPN and when it's the better choice for reaching specific blocked sites, see /en/proxy/.

The Happ Proxy Utility for desktop

On Windows, macOS, and Linux, a dedicated app — the Happ Proxy Utility — makes working with the proxy much easier. It lets you turn proxying on and off in one click and bind specific apps to it without manually typing the address and port into each program's settings. Download it and read the instructions on /en/proxy-utility/.

Binding a specific app to the proxy

Copy the local proxy's address and port from Happ and paste them into the network settings of the browser or app you want to reach blocked resources with — or use the Happ Proxy Utility's automatic binding if it's available on your platform. The rest of your device keeps using your regular internet connection, bypassing the server entirely.

Proxy won't connect — what to check

The usual culprits are an outdated key or an app that relies on its own network settings instead of the system proxy. Confirm your key is still active in the Telegram bot and double-check the specific app's settings. If it's still not working, see /en/support/not-working/.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a different key for Proxy mode?

No — the same key or subscription link works for both a regular VPN connection and Proxy mode in Happ.

What does the Happ Proxy Utility actually do?

It simplifies proxy management on desktop: one-click on/off and binding specific apps without manually entering the address and port.

Can VPN and Proxy run at the same time?

No, only one mode is active at a time in Happ, but you can switch between them whenever you like.

An app can't detect the proxy — what now?

Check that the app's network settings have the current address and port shown in Happ, and confirm your key is still active.
